Developed by ASUNI CAD, the VisualARQ Rhino plug-in includes “smart” architectural elements that enhance architectural 2-D drawing and 3-D modeling.
Barcelona, 21st October, 2010 - ASUNI CAD’s research and development department has developed VisualARQ, a plug-in that enhances the productivity and efficiency of architectural projects done in Rhinoceros. VisualARQ tools are user and resource friendly, helping CAD professionals strengthen and improve their workflow.
Fully integrated into Rhino, VisualARQ lets you accurately draw, design, and model an architectural project in 2-and 3-D at the same time. From a 3-D model you can create plans and full documentation (perspective and plan views, sections, elevations, doors and windows, surfaces, dimensions, etc.). Its complete set of tools optimize the architectural design process by providing greater flexibility in a highly reduced time frame.
“With VisualARQ you can design in 2-D and display the 3-D model simultaneously, or you can work in 3-D and show the 2-D display,” says Francesc Pedrerol, ASUNI CAD general manager. “VisualARQ is affordable (€395 for the download version, and €495 for the physical package). Together with Rhino (€995), VisualARQ makes a surprisingly affordable package.”
“Smart” architectural objects
“The most important enhancement in VisualARQ,” Pedrerol says, “Is the ability to work with “smart” architectural objects.
VisualARQ library of “smart” objects includes doors, windows, stairs, columns, and walls that behave as parametric objects. When you change an object’s attribute, the whole project is automatically updated to adapt to these changes. In addition, CAD lines are recognized as objects that can be defined and edited to create walls, doors, windows, stairs, etc. The dynamic dropdown menu system lets you conveniently create and edit these elements, manage layers, and set up entities.
VisualARQ can automatically create project documentation (plans, elevations, sections, doors and windows, dimensions, surfaces, etc.) from a 3-D model. The documentation is associated with the drawing and updates automatically when the design changes. Visual display and drawing styles are fully customizable, allowing many different graphical display possibilities.
Shape flexibility in wall design
VisualARQ walls are based on NURBS curves. This technology lets you draw walls from straight lines, arcs, and along free-form curves. Any volume created with Rhinoceros can be integrated into a project created with VisualARQ ─no restriction on creating shapes and geometry in a new architectural design applies.

VisualARQ and the future
The ASUNI CAD R&D department continually improves and enhances the applications and tools they develop. Francesc Salla, Architecture Product Manager, plays an important role in improving the tools and design processes that architects use in real life. “We are developing and improving the first version of VisualARQ tools to help streamline the work of architects. The goal is to achieve 100% parameterization in architectural projects, so that small changes are automatically regenerated.”
“Our team is always looking for compatibility with other tools and stays on top of advances in current geometry and architecture," says Salla. “We are working on automatic preview of objects in the editing stage, object combination, and integration with energy flows in architectural designs. We want to integrate basic tools to enhance the intuitive design of sustainable architecture without being extremely technical.” Salla points out. “VisualARQ will soon support IFC files, allowing other platforms to import and export project files done in VisualARQ.”
